Short answer

Bloating and swelling in the stomach often reflect trapped gas, constipation, food intolerance, or changes in digestion, but persistent or severe symptoms need medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common description
Fullness, pressure, tightness, or visible abdominal swelling
Useful record
Meals, bowel movements, timing, and accompanying symptoms
Urgent warning
Severe pain, repeated vomiting, or inability to pass stool or gas

What bloating can mean

Bloating is a sensation of fullness, pressure, or tightness in the abdomen. The abdomen may look larger during the day, especially after meals. Swallowed air, gas made during digestion, constipation, and eating quickly can all contribute. Some people notice symptoms after specific carbohydrates, dairy products, fizzy drinks, or large meals.

Recurring bloating may occur with irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerance, lactose intolerance, or coeliac disease. Giardiasis and Helicobacter pylori infection can also cause digestive symptoms, particularly when bloating occurs alongside diarrhoea, nausea, upper-abdominal discomfort, or weight loss. A symptom by itself cannot identify the cause.

What you can do

Keep a brief food-and-symptom diary to record meals, bowel movements, discomfort, and timing. Eat slowly, chew thoroughly, choose smaller meals, and reduce fizzy drinks if they worsen the swelling. Gentle walking may help gas move through the bowel. If constipation is present, increase fluids and fibre gradually; a sudden increase in fibre can temporarily add gas.

Avoid removing several food groups without advice, since this can make meals unbalanced and obscure the trigger. A clinician or nutrition counsellor can help plan a structured elimination and reintroduction approach when food intolerance is suspected.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a medical review if bloating keeps returning, does not settle, or interferes with eating, sleep, or daily activities. Assessment is also sensible when it comes with ongoing diarrhoea or constipation, vomiting, fever, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or marked tiredness.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a hard or very swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, or trouble breathing. These features can signal a problem that needs prompt examination rather than home monitoring.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what causes fit the timing and pattern of your symptoms, whether constipation or a food trigger may be contributing, and whether testing is appropriate. Bring your symptom diary and a list of medicines or supplements, including products that may affect bowel movements.

Questions people ask

Can bloating be caused by constipation?

Yes. Stool moving slowly through the bowel can increase fullness and gas. Fluids, gradual fibre changes, movement, and advice from a clinician can help address the pattern.

Should I stop eating dairy if I feel bloated?

Not necessarily. Dairy may be a trigger for lactose intolerance, but symptoms can have other causes. Record the pattern and seek guidance before making broad or prolonged dietary restrictions.

When is bloating an emergency?

Get urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a hard or very swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, trouble breathing, or inability to pass stool or gas.
