Bloated stomach and body aches

A viral illness such as influenza or COVID-19 can cause widespread aches alongside appetite or bowel changes. Travel, insect exposure, unpasteurised animal products, or fever may make illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever, or brucellosis relevant. Fibromyalgia can cause widespread pain and fatigue, while hypothyroidism may slow digestion and cause constipation. A condition presents with its own pattern; bloating alone does not identify the cause.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose light meals if nausea or reduced appetite is present. Check your temperature and record the location and timing of aches, bowel changes, travel, bites, and new medicines. Avoid strenuous exercise while unwell. Do not start antibiotics or antimalarial treatment without a clinician’s assessment, because the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, dehydration, blood in stool, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt assessment for fever after travel, a new rash with illness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or symptoms that continue after the acute illness settles.

Tell your doctor about fever, travel, insect bites, food exposures, bowel changes, sleep, and fatigue. Ask which examination or tests can separate an infection from a thyroid, pain, or digestive condition.
