Blisters on the skin and mucous membranes

Mucous membranes include the moist linings of the mouth, eyes, nose, genitals, and anus. Painful sores or blisters in these areas can interfere with drinking, seeing, urinating, and protecting delicate tissue.

A combined skin and mucosal eruption can occur with certain infections, immune-driven blistering disorders, or serious medicine reactions. Appearance alone may not separate these causes, so timing, pain, fever, recent illness, and every prescription, non-prescription medicine, or supplement are relevant.

Chickenpox commonly presents with crops of itchy skin blisters, while shingles usually presents with painful grouped blisters in a localised distribution; direct mucosal or eye involvement still changes the urgency. Contact dermatitis more often follows the shape of an exposure, but a clinician should assess unexplained involvement of moist linings rather than relying on pattern matching at home.

Contact a healthcare service promptly and describe all affected sites. Keep the skin clean, avoid breaking blisters, use separate towels, and wash your hands after touching dressings. Sip fluids if the mouth is sore, provided swallowing is safe, and avoid spicy or acidic foods that aggravate raw tissue.

Do not place ordinary skin creams inside the eyes, mouth, or genital area. Keep medicine packaging or a current medicine list available for the clinician. Do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without urgent professional instructions unless emergency services direct you otherwise.

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, trouble swallowing saliva, eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, faintness, or inability to drink. Rapidly spreading blisters, widespread tender red skin, skin peeling, fever with marked illness, or sores that make urination difficult also require urgent evaluation.

Treat a blistering skin and mucosal rash that starts after a new or recently changed medicine as urgent, even if the first affected area looks small. Bring the medicine names and the timing of doses, but do not delay care while gathering details.

Ask which sites need examination, whether eye or genital specialists should be involved, and whether swabs, blood tests, or a skin sample may clarify the cause. Report recent medicines, vaccinations, infections, travel, close contacts with rashes, and previous episodes, along with the order in which symptoms appeared.
