Treatment for blisters on the skin

Avoid piercing an intact blister at home. Its surface forms a natural cover while new skin develops, whereas opening it creates a route for irritation and infection.

Friction, heat, an irritant or allergy, eczema, and some infections can all separate skin layers and trap fluid. Location and pattern matter: dyshidrotic eczema can present with intensely itchy small blisters on the hands or feet, while shingles commonly presents with painful grouped blisters in a limited band on one side.

A clinician may recommend anti-inflammatory treatment for dermatitis or antiviral treatment for a suitable viral illness. Antibiotics do not treat every blister and should be used only when a clinician identifies a reason for them.

Remove the source of rubbing or heat, wash the surrounding skin gently, pat it dry, and use a clean dressing that will not stick to the surface. Padding around a friction blister can reduce pressure without pressing directly on its centre. Replace a wet, dirty, or loose dressing.

When the blister has already torn, do not pull off attached skin. Rinse away visible dirt, cover the raw area, and monitor it. Avoid sharing towels when an infectious rash is possible, and avoid scratching because broken skin is easier to infect.

Seek timely care if redness spreads beyond the blister, pain or swelling increases, pus appears, the area becomes unusually warm, or you feel feverish or unwell. Assessment is also sensible for recurrent unexplained blisters, a rapidly spreading eruption, or blisters near an eye, inside the mouth, or on the genitals.

Get urgent help for breathing or swallowing difficulty, eye pain or vision changes, widespread peeling, severe weakness, or a blistering rash that begins after a new medicine. People with poor circulation, reduced sensation, or impaired immune defences should obtain early advice for blisters on the feet or wounds that are not improving.

Tell your clinician when the blisters began, whether they itch or hurt, what touched the area, and whether anyone nearby has a similar rash. Ask what diagnosis fits the pattern, whether a test is needed, which dressing or medicine is appropriate, and what change should trigger reassessment.
