When blisters appear on the body

Notice whether they are isolated or widespread, painful or itchy, clustered or scattered, and whether fever, skin tenderness, peeling, or sores on moist surfaces occur with them.

Contact dermatitis can present with itchy blisters in areas exposed to an irritant or allergen. Sunburn produces blistering within strongly exposed skin. Dyshidrotic eczema characteristically affects the hands or feet rather than appearing randomly across the trunk.

Shingles often presents as painful grouped blisters in a band on one side. Chickenpox can present with scattered itchy spots that become blisters in successive crops and may accompany fever or tiredness. Widespread blistering can also follow a medicine or another inflammatory process, so rapid spread deserves prompt evaluation.

Keep the area clean, use cool compresses for comfort, and place a loose non-stick dressing over blisters likely to rub. Do not puncture them or peel away attached skin. Wash your hands after touching the rash and avoid sharing towels until an infectious cause has been excluded.

Photograph the distribution in good light and record when new groups appear. List recent medicines, illnesses, vaccinations, travel, sun exposure, and new personal-care or cleaning products. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without clinical advice unless emergency services direct you to do so.

Get urgent medical help when body blisters are rapidly spreading, the skin is very painful or peeling, or the rash involves the eyes, mouth, or genitals. Breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, confusion, or blistering after a newly started medicine also requires urgent assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, pus, expanding redness, red streaks, increasing warmth, or worsening pain. Review is also appropriate when the cause is unclear, fresh blisters continue to form, the rash returns, or reduced immunity could make infection more serious.

Ask whether the distribution suggests an infection, exposure, or inflammatory disorder; whether a swab, skin sample, or other test is appropriate; and how to dress open areas. Also confirm whether close contact should be limited and whether any household member needs advice.
