Blepharoplasty for hooded eyelids

Short answer
Upper blepharoplasty may reduce hooding caused by excess eyelid skin, provided brow position and eye closure are carefully assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Hooding
- Skin drapes across the upper-eyelid crease.
- Planning limit
- Enough skin must remain for comfortable, complete eye closure.
- Brow contribution
- A low brow can add to apparent upper-eyelid skin excess.
The short answer
The goal is a functional, balanced eyelid rather than removal of every fold. Natural anatomy, brow descent and the amount of skin needed for comfortable closure set practical limits.
Where the hood comes from
Hooding describes skin that drapes over the upper-lid crease. It can reflect inherited eyelid shape, dermatochalasis, a low brow or a mixture of these. A surgeon must also distinguish hooding from true drooping of the eyelid edge.
Outer hooding may feel heavy or narrow the upper-side field of view, while mild folds may be purely an appearance concern. Tear trough hollows affect the lower eyelid and do not explain an upper-lid hood.
Planning a safe change
During assessment, relax your forehead instead of lifting the brows to expose the lid. The clinician can then examine brow height, skin redundancy, lid margin position, previous scars, blinking and the tear film.
Explain any dryness, contact-lens intolerance, previous facial treatment and medicines that affect healing. If surgery is suitable, follow instructions about wound care, activity, eye lubrication and review appointments. Plasma pen treatment uses a different method and cannot be assumed to provide the same degree or type of correction as eyelid surgery.
Symptoms that should not wait
Seek urgent assessment if eyelid position changes suddenly, especially with double vision, unequal pupils, severe headache, facial weakness or other neurological symptoms. A gradual hood without these features can be evaluated routinely.
Once surgery has been performed, reduced vision, severe eye pain, fast-growing swelling, persistent bleeding, worsening discharge or inability to shut the eye warrants immediate contact with the surgical team or emergency care.
Discussion points for consultation
Ask how much of the hood comes from eyelid skin versus brow position, where the scar is expected to sit, how closure will be preserved and whether your desired crease shape fits your underlying anatomy.

Questions people ask
Can blepharoplasty change my natural eyelid crease?
The crease may look more visible after overlying skin is reduced, but the achievable contour depends on your anatomy and the surgical plan. Discuss the intended crease before surgery.
Why should I stop lifting my brows during the examination?
Forehead effort can temporarily pull the hood upward and hide how much brow descent contributes. A relaxed assessment gives the surgeon a clearer view of the resting anatomy.
Can too much upper-lid skin be removed?
Yes. Excessive removal can interfere with closure and expose the eye surface, which is why measurements, dryness assessment and conservative planning matter.
