Bleeding when coughing: symptoms to know

A few red streaks may appear when repeated coughing irritates the throat or bronchial tubes. Acute Bronchitis and a Common Cold can inflame these passages. Blood may also be associated with Bronchiectasis, in which widened airways collect mucus, or with Asthma and other causes of persistent cough. Acid Reflux can trigger cough and throat irritation, but it does not explain every episode of blood.

Note whether the material is bright red, pink and frothy, or dark and mixed with mucus. Blood from the stomach can look different and may follow nausea or vomiting. A clinician will also want to know about fever, breathlessness, chest discomfort, weight change, recent travel, smoking, and blood-thinning medicines.

Rest, sip fluids if swallowing is comfortable, and avoid smoking or vaping. Do not take someone else’s antibiotics or use a cough suppressant to conceal worsening symptoms. Photograph the sputum or keep a small description of it, without handling it unnecessarily. Contact a healthcare professional promptly, especially if the bleeding recurs or the cough is not settling.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, or a large or ongoing flow of blood. Seek urgent same-day care for clots, repeated episodes, fever with deterioration, or blood after a chest injury. If you take anticoagulants or have a known lung condition, report the symptom promptly even when the amount seems small.
