Bleeding during sex when periods have stopped

Bleeding during or after sex when you have no periods should be checked, particularly after menopause or if it recurs. The source may be dry or irritated vaginal tissue, the cervix, an infection, hormonal change, pregnancy-related bleeding, or another condition requiring examination.

Periods can stop during pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, or because of changes in hormones, weight, stress, medicines, or health conditions. Polycystic ovary syndrome commonly presents with irregular or absent periods, while premature ovarian insufficiency may present with periods becoming infrequent or stopping alongside symptoms such as hot flushes or vaginal dryness.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, fainting, pronounced dizziness, severe or one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. These warning signs can require immediate examination and pregnancy-related checks.

Ask where the blood appears to be coming from, whether the vaginal tissue or cervix shows a treatable cause, and which tests fit your age, symptoms, contraception, and pregnancy possibility. If dryness is suspected, ask about suitable moisturisers, lubricants, and prescription options.
