Bleeding during sex but not afterwards

The fact that blood stops quickly does not reveal its source or rule out a problem. A tiny irritated area may bleed only while touched, while blood noticed during sex could also be the beginning or end of menstrual spotting.

Friction can irritate dry or inflamed vaginal tissue. The cervix may bleed on contact because of inflammation, a benign surface change, or a small growth. Infection is another possibility. Less commonly, abnormal cervical or vaginal tissue can present with bleeding during or after sex, which is why recurrence deserves examination rather than diagnosis by appearance.

Blood on a partner, condom, fingers, or sex toy may not always be yours. Checking for cuts or skin irritation on both partners can clarify this, while persistent uncertainty still calls for medical review.

Stop if sex hurts or active bleeding appears. Note where the blood was seen, its colour and amount, the type of sexual contact, lubrication used, menstrual timing, and any pelvic pain, discharge, itching, or urinary symptoms. Avoid inserting products intended to mask bleeding before an examination.

Arrange a primary-care, gynaecology, or sexual-health appointment when the cause is unclear, particularly if it happens again. The assessment may include looking at the vulva, vagina, and cervix and offering infection or pregnancy testing when relevant.

Seek urgent help if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint or weak, or there is severe pelvic or abdominal pain. A missed period or possible pregnancy together with unusual bleeding and one-sided or significant abdominal pain also needs urgent assessment.

Fever, foul-smelling discharge, or rapidly worsening pain can accompany infection and should be assessed promptly. Repeated light contact bleeding is not usually an emergency, but it should still be examined.

Ask whether the bleeding appears to come from the vagina or cervix, whether cervical screening is due, and whether infection testing is suitable. Mention contraception, pregnancy possibility, medicines that affect bleeding, dryness, recent procedures, and any new partner or change in sexual activity.
