Bleeding Between Ovulation and Your Period

Timing alone cannot identify the cause. Hormonal changes, contraception, pregnancy-related bleeding, infection, cervical irritation, polyps, or fibroids may produce bleeding between periods.

A small amount of pink, red, or brown spotting around the middle or later part of a cycle may reflect a brief hormonal shift. Blood noticed after sex can instead come from the cervix or vaginal tissue. Chlamydia can present with bleeding between periods, pelvic discomfort, unusual discharge, or pain when urinating, although some people notice no symptoms.

Endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids can also present with intermenstrual bleeding. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer may present with unusual vaginal bleeding, including bleeding after sex, while womb cancer can present with bleeding that is unexpected for the person's life stage. These possibilities require examination rather than conclusions based on timing.

Record the first day of each period, when spotting appears, its colour and flow, and whether it follows sex. Note pelvic pain, discharge, fever, missed periods, contraception changes, and medicines. This pattern helps a clinician distinguish a cycle-related episode from bleeding that needs investigation.

Take a home pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible or a period is late. Arrange a routine appointment if spotting returns, lasts across several days, begins after sex, or represents a new change. A clinician may discuss pregnancy testing, infection testing, a pelvic examination, cervical screening history, or imaging according to your symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked weakness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding with a positive pregnancy test. These features need prompt assessment because blood loss or an ectopic pregnancy may require urgent treatment.

Book an appointment soon for recurrent bleeding, bleeding after sex, foul-smelling discharge, fever, pelvic pain, or any vaginal bleeding after menopause. Do not wait for the next cycle if symptoms are worsening.

Ask whether the pattern fits a hormonal change, whether pregnancy or infection testing is appropriate, and whether your cervix or uterus should be examined. Bring your cycle record and a list of contraception, supplements, and medicines, including anything recently started or stopped.
