Bleeding again after your period stopped

A brief return of light flow may be part of the same cycle, while bleeding after a long gap needs a different assessment. Arrange medical advice if it is new, repeated or unexplained.

If bleeding returns shortly after a period seemed to finish, possible explanations include remaining menstrual flow, hormonal cycle changes, irritation after sex, infection, or bleeding from the cervix. If periods had been absent for months, pregnancy, medication effects and conditions affecting ovulation may also be considered.

Bleeding after menopause should be medically assessed, including a single episode or light spotting. It does not identify a particular condition by itself, but the source needs to be checked.

These features need prompt assessment even if a pregnancy test is negative or has not been taken.

Book a medical appointment for bleeding after menopause, repeated bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or a lasting change in your usual pattern. Mention medicines that affect bleeding and any personal history of gynaecological problems.

Ask whether the bleeding pattern could relate to pregnancy, contraception, medicines, ovulation or menopause; whether an examination or tests are appropriate; and what change should trigger urgent reassessment.
