Bleeding After Sex Just After Your Period

Sex can dislodge blood that remained in the vagina as menstrual flow was ending. Friction can also make delicate vaginal or cervical tissue bleed, especially when lubrication is limited.

Brown or dark spotting soon after a period often reflects older blood, while fresh red blood suggests more recent bleeding. Colour alone cannot identify the source.

Other explanations include a small surface injury, cervical inflammation, a sexually transmitted infection, a cervical polyp, or vaginal dryness. Cervical dysplasia and cancers of the cervix or vagina can present with bleeding after sex, but this symptom has many non-cancerous causes and requires examination rather than assumption.

Note when the bleeding began, its colour and amount, whether it stopped, and any pain, unusual discharge, odour, itching, urinary symptoms, or missed period. This pattern helps a clinician distinguish menstrual spotting from contact bleeding.

Avoid penetration until active bleeding or soreness settles. When you resume, adequate lubrication and gentler contact may reduce friction. Arrange a routine appointment if bleeding happens again, persists beyond the expected end of your period, or follows sex consistently. A clinician may discuss pregnancy testing, infection testing, cervical screening history, and a pelvic examination.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding with possible pregnancy. These features need assessment based on their severity, regardless of when your period ended.

Book a timely assessment for recurrent bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, bleeding after menopause, persistent unusual discharge, or pelvic discomfort. Do not delay cervical screening or follow-up that is already due.

Ask whether the bleeding seems to come from the vagina, cervix, or uterus; whether pregnancy or infection testing is appropriate; and whether your cervical screening is current. Also mention medicines, contraception, recent procedures, and any change in your menstrual pattern.
