What to Do About Bleeding After Sex

A light mark may follow friction or dryness, but bleeding after sex can also come from infection, a cervical polyp, cervical surface changes, or other vaginal, cervical, or uterine causes. The amount of blood alone does not reveal the cause.

Work out where you noticed blood: on the skin or bedding, from the vagina, mixed with urine, or from the rectum. Record when it began, how long it lasted, its amount and colour, menstrual dates, pregnancy possibility, pain with sex, pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, discharge, odour, and itching.

Bleeding caused by dryness may occur with tender or irritated tissue. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause often presents with dryness, burning, urinary symptoms, and discomfort during sex. Chlamydia may present with cervical inflammation, unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or bleeding after sex.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can present with postcoital bleeding. This symptom has many possible causes, so it requires assessment rather than conclusions based on fear or reassurance alone.

Book a GP, gynaecology, or sexual health visit if bleeding is unexplained, returns, or is accompanied by pain or discharge. Mention medicines, contraception, pregnancy possibility, recent procedures, and cervical screening history. If STI exposure could apply, request testing and use barrier protection or avoid sex until you receive advice.

While the tissue settles, avoid penetration, douching, and fragranced vaginal products. When comfortable, a simple water- or silicone-based lubricant can reduce friction. Do not apply medication inside the vagina unless a clinician has recommended it for a diagnosed cause.

Assessment may involve a pregnancy test, infection tests, and examination of the vulva, vagina, and cervix. Further investigation depends on what is found; a cone biopsy is reserved for particular cervical cell changes, not used automatically for bleeding after sex.

Go for urgent assessment if bleeding is heavy or increasing, you feel faint or severely dizzy, or you have intense abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever with pelvic pain, or signs of being acutely unwell. Possible pregnancy combined with unusual bleeding and abdominal pain also needs urgent evaluation.

Bleeding after menopause should be checked promptly even if it happens once. Repeated episodes, persistent discharge, a visible sore or lump, or bleeding continuing between periods also justify timely clinical review.

Ask which tissue appears to be bleeding, what tests are appropriate, and whether cervical screening is current. Find out how to manage dryness or discomfort safely, when results will arrive, what follow-up is planned, and exactly which symptoms should take you to urgent care.
