Bleeding After Sex a Week After Your Period

Cycle timing can overlap with light mid-cycle spotting, but bleeding triggered by penetration may come from the vagina or cervix. Friction, dryness, cervical surface changes, a small polyp, or infection are among the possibilities.

Compare the episode with your usual cycle rather than relying on the calendar alone. Note whether bleeding started during sex, appeared once when wiping, or continued afterward. Also record pain with penetration, pelvic discomfort, discharge, odour, itching, urinary symptoms, and recent changes in contraception.

Chlamydia can present with inflammation of the cervix, discharge, or bleeding after sex. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can present with fragile, dry vaginal tissue and contact bleeding. These conditions need different treatment, so symptoms cannot replace an examination or appropriate testing.

Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with bleeding after sex; vaginal cancer can also present this way. The presence of bleeding does not establish any of these diagnoses, but repeated unexplained episodes deserve evaluation.

Make an appointment with a GP, gynaecologist, or sexual health clinic if the bleeding happens again, is unexplained, or comes with other symptoms. Bring the dates of your last periods, information about contraception and medicines, pregnancy possibility, cervical screening history, and any STI exposure.

Allow irritation to settle before further penetration. A plain water- or silicone-based lubricant may reduce friction, but it should not be used to dismiss continued bleeding. Depending on your history, a clinician may suggest pregnancy testing, STI testing, and examination of the vulva, vagina, and cervix.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, collapse, faintness, fever with pelvic pain, or feeling very unwell. If a period was unusual or pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided or significant abdominal pain needs rapid assessment.

Arrange prompt evaluation for recurrent contact bleeding, bleeding with persistent discharge, or bleeding after menopause. Keep cervical screening up to date, while remembering that screening is not a diagnostic test for a current bleeding episode.

Ask whether the pattern looks like contact bleeding or bleeding from the uterus, and which tests fit your history. Clarify whether your cervix needs examination, whether infection testing is advised, when to expect results, and what follow-up is needed if bleeding occurs again.
