Bleeding After Sex When Your Tubes Are Tied

Tubal sterilisation blocks or cuts the fallopian tubes but does not directly alter the vagina or cervix. Bleeding may instead come from friction, dryness, a small cervical growth, cervical surface changes, infection, or another gynaecological cause.

Notice whether the blood is on tissue or bedding, mixed with urine, or continuing like a period. Burning when urinating or urinary urgency suggests that the urinary tract also needs assessment. Pain, unusual discharge, odour, itching, or bleeding between periods gives the clinician useful clues.

Chlamydia can inflame the cervix and present with bleeding after sex. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can present with dryness, irritation, and contact bleeding. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can also present with bleeding after sex, but the symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

Although sterilisation is intended to prevent pregnancy, pregnancy should still be considered if a period is late or symptoms suggest it. A pregnancy outside the uterus requires urgent assessment.

Pause penetrative sex until active bleeding and soreness settle. Avoid douching or inserting products intended to clean the vagina. If dryness or friction seems relevant, use a simple water- or silicone-based lubricant when you resume.

Arrange a GP, gynaecology, or sexual health appointment, particularly if bleeding returns. Record its timing, amount, colour, connection with sex, menstrual dates, pelvic symptoms, urinary symptoms, medicines, and the date and type of sterilisation. Depending on your situation, assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, and examination of the vagina and cervix.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy or increasing bleeding, fainting, marked dizziness, severe lower abdominal or shoulder-tip pain, fever with pelvic pain, or feeling acutely unwell. A missed period together with unusual bleeding and abdominal pain also needs prompt assessment because ectopic pregnancy is possible after sterilisation.

Any bleeding after menopause should be evaluated promptly. Recurrent bleeding, bleeding with an unusual discharge, or an overdue cervical screening appointment warrants a timely clinic visit even when the bleeding is light.

Ask where the blood appears to be coming from, whether you need pregnancy or infection testing, whether the cervix and vagina look healthy, and whether cervical screening is due. Also ask what change in bleeding or pain should trigger urgent care and whether follow-up is needed if the examination is normal.
