Bleeding the Day After Sex

A delay does not reliably reveal the cause. A small amount of blood can take time to leave the vagina, and bleeding may also coincide with a period or unscheduled hormonal-contraception spotting.

Friction can irritate dry or delicate vaginal tissue, while contact with an inflamed cervix or cervical polyp can produce spotting that is only seen later on underwear or when wiping. Cervical inflammation may be linked to an infection such as chlamydia.

Changes associated with menopause can make vaginal tissue drier and easier to injure. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, but the timing alone cannot distinguish these conditions from benign causes. A clinician assesses the pattern together with examination and testing.

Record the amount and colour of blood, whether it is mixed with discharge, where you were in your menstrual cycle, and whether sex was painful or involved dryness. Note contraception, new medicines, pregnancy possibility, urinary discomfort, and any new sexual exposure.

If bleeding is more than a one-off trace, returns after sex, or has no clear link to a period, arrange a medical or sexual-health visit. Evaluation may involve a pregnancy test, STI testing, and inspection of the vagina and cervix. A water-based lubricant may reduce friction if dryness is present, but it does not replace assessment of repeated bleeding.

Seek urgent help if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint or very dizzy, or you develop severe abdominal or pelvic pain. A late period combined with unusual bleeding and abdominal pain also requires urgent assessment for a possible ectopic pregnancy.

Contact a clinician promptly when delayed bleeding keeps happening, comes with offensive-smelling discharge, fever, pelvic pain, or pain when urinating. Bleeding after menopause should always be evaluated, including a single light episode.

Ask whether the timing fits contact bleeding, whether an STI or pregnancy test is appropriate, and if the vagina and cervix need examination. You can also ask whether contraception may contribute, whether cervical screening is up to date, and when further investigation would be recommended.
