Bleeding After Sex With Stomach Pain

The location and timing matter: lower-abdominal pain may come from pelvic organs, while surface irritation may cause light contact bleeding without explaining deeper pain.

An inflamed cervix or pelvic infection can present with pain and bleeding after sex, sometimes alongside unusual discharge, fever, or urinary discomfort. Deep penetration may aggravate an already tender pelvic area but does not establish the underlying cause.

Other explanations include vaginal dryness or a cervical polyp for the bleeding, with a separate digestive or muscular cause for abdominal pain. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided or significant pain requires prompt attention because an ectopic pregnancy must be ruled out. Cervical or vaginal disease is a less common consideration assessed through examination.

Stop sexual activity if it worsens pain or bleeding. Note whether the discomfort is central or one-sided, whether it began during penetration or afterward, and whether you have a late period, shoulder-tip pain, fever, discharge, nausea, or pain when urinating.

Arrange an assessment. Depending on your symptoms, a clinician may recommend a pregnancy test, STI swabs or urine testing, examination of the abdomen, vagina and cervix, or pelvic imaging. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics, as they may not treat the cause and can interfere with appropriate management.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly increasing pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, collapse, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, breathing difficulty, or a pale and clammy feeling. These symptoms need immediate evaluation rather than waiting for a routine visit.

Obtain urgent assessment after a missed period or positive pregnancy test when bleeding and abdominal pain occur together. Fever, vomiting, or worsening pelvic pain also merits same-day medical advice because infection may need prompt treatment.

Ask whether pregnancy has been excluded, whether the pain pattern suggests a pelvic infection, and which STI tests are suitable. It is also reasonable to ask if the cervix looked irritated, whether imaging is needed, and what change in pain or bleeding should send you to emergency care.
