A changed odour can occur when the normal vaginal balance is disturbed, while bleeding may come from irritated vaginal tissue or an inflamed cervix. Sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia, can inflame the cervix and may present with discharge or bleeding after sex.

Dry or fragile tissue, cervical polyps, and changes around menopause can also lead to contact bleeding. Less commonly, cervical or vaginal disease can present with bleeding after sex, so persistent or unexplained episodes deserve an examination rather than self-treatment.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecology, primary-care, or sexual-health clinician. Until assessed, avoid vaginal douching and scented products because they may worsen irritation or alter test results. Consider pausing sex if it triggers pain or fresh bleeding, and use barrier protection if an infection is possible.

Record the discharge colour and odour, the amount of blood, pelvic discomfort, urinary symptoms, your last period, pregnancy possibility, contraception, and any new sexual partner. Testing may include a pregnancy test, vaginal or cervical swabs, and an examination of the vagina and cervix.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening lower-abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, vomiting, or feeling acutely unwell. Unusual bleeding with abdominal pain after a missed period also needs urgent assessment because pregnancy outside the womb must be excluded.

Book prompt assessment if the odour or discharge persists, bleeding happens again, urination becomes painful, or you develop pelvic pain. Any bleeding after menopause should be checked even if it is light or occurs only once.

Ask which infections are being tested for, whether a cervical screening result is due, and whether your cervix appears inflamed or has a polyp. You can also ask when it is appropriate to resume sex, whether a partner needs testing, and what follow-up is needed if initial tests are negative.
