Bleeding after sex right before a period

Menstrual flow can begin as light pink, red or brown spotting, and sex may simply coincide with its start. If normal flow follows and the event does not recur at other points in the cycle, that sequence provides useful context. It does not confirm the source, because contact with dry or irritated vaginal or cervical tissue can also cause spotting.

A sensitive cervical surface, a polyp or an infection may bleed when touched. Chlamydia is one condition that can present with bleeding after sex, but many people with it have few symptoms and a test is needed for diagnosis. Persistent postcoital bleeding can also occur with cervical or vaginal cell changes, so examination and appropriate cervical screening matter.

For light spotting without pain, use a pad and watch whether it develops into your usual period. Write down when intercourse occurred, when full menstrual flow began, the amount and colour, and whether penetration felt dry or uncomfortable. Do not douche or place fragranced products inside the vagina, as irritation can cloud the picture.

Book a medical or sexual-health appointment when bleeding after sex repeats, occurs well before expected menstruation, appears between periods or is accompanied by discharge, pain or urinary symptoms. Mention contraception, recent changes in cycle pattern, pregnancy possibility, new sexual partners and when cervical screening was last completed. Depending on the history, assessment may include pregnancy and infection tests plus examination of the vagina and cervix.

Obtain urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, significant dizziness or weakness. If the expected period does not arrive and unusual bleeding occurs with pelvic pain, pregnancy-related causes need urgent exclusion. Fever, feeling acutely unwell or bad-smelling discharge can point to infection and should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether the episode resembles the beginning of menstruation or bleeding from contact, and whether your cycle or contraception could explain the timing. Discuss the need for a pregnancy test, infection screening, cervical examination or cervical screening, and ask what change in the bleeding pattern should prompt urgent care.
