Bleeding after sex right after a period

A period may appear to have ended while a small amount of blood remains in the vagina or uterus. Penetration and pelvic muscle contractions can bring it out, often as brown or dark red spotting. Bright red blood that begins during sex, particularly when it happens again outside menstrual days, is more suggestive of bleeding from tissue touched by friction.

Possible sources include a small vaginal graze, dryness, a sensitive area on the cervix, a cervical polyp or inflammation. Chlamydia can present with postcoital bleeding, though the bleeding pattern cannot identify an infection by itself. Cervical and vaginal conditions are assessed according to examination findings and screening history, not simply by the timing within the cycle.

Record the last day of normal menstrual flow, the blood's colour and amount, and whether it started before, during or after sex. Include pain, dryness, discharge, odour, urinary symptoms and any missed or late period. This short record helps distinguish lingering flow from a pattern consistently provoked by contact.

Allow irritation to settle before further penetration. If dryness was present, use generous water-based lubricant next time and avoid perfumed washes or douching. Arrange a routine appointment if the bleeding returns, occurs between periods, follows sex on more than one occasion, or comes with possible infection symptoms. Testing may involve a pregnancy test, infection swab and examination of the vagina and cervix.

Seek urgent assessment if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint or weak, or you develop severe pelvic or abdominal pain. Unusual bleeding with a missed period and one-sided or intense pelvic pain requires urgent evaluation because a pregnancy-related problem must be excluded. Fever, worsening pain or foul-smelling discharge also warrants prompt medical advice.

Ask whether the colour and timing fit residual menstrual blood or whether contact bleeding is more likely. Clarify whether you need pregnancy or infection testing, a cervical examination, updated cervical screening, or review of contraception that may alter your bleeding pattern.
