Bleeding after sex when you have no period

A missed period and postcoital bleeding may be separate events. Hormonal changes, contraception, menopause, vaginal or cervical irritation, and infection can affect one or both symptoms.

Periods may stop because of pregnancy, hormonal contraception, perimenopause, breastfeeding, stress, weight change, intensive exercise, or a health condition affecting ovulation. Meanwhile, blood seen after sex often comes from delicate vaginal tissue or the cervix. Dryness related to genitourinary syndrome of menopause, friction, a cervical polyp, or inflammation from chlamydia may cause contact bleeding.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, including after periods have stopped. Postmenopausal bleeding deserves medical assessment even when it happens only once or follows sex.

Take a home pregnancy test if conception is possible, following the test instructions. If it is negative but the period remains absent, repeat testing or arrange clinical advice according to the timing. Write down the date of your last period, contraception, menopause status, bleeding amount, discharge, medicines, and any pelvic or urinary symptoms.

Book an examination for bleeding that is unexplained, repeats, or occurs after menopause. A clinician may recommend pregnancy and infection tests, look at the vagina and cervix, review cervical screening, and investigate why menstruation has stopped.

Seek emergency care if bleeding accompanies severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, pronounced dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, breathing difficulty, or heavy blood loss. These warning signs matter whether or not a home pregnancy test has been taken.

Obtain prompt advice for a positive pregnancy test with bleeding, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or new pelvic pain. Arrange timely assessment for any bleeding after menopause and for recurring bleeding after sex.

Ask whether the absent period and bleeding are likely connected, when pregnancy testing will be reliable, and which examination or tests are appropriate. Discuss cervical screening, vaginal dryness, contraception effects, infection testing, and how long to wait for menstruation before further investigation.
