Light pink bleeding after sex: what it may mean

Friction, vaginal dryness, a sensitive area on the cervix, a cervical polyp, or an infection can all cause postcoital bleeding. Arrange a medical check, especially if it happens again, occurs after menopause, or comes with pain, discharge, or urinary symptoms.

A small surface tear from friction may leave faint pink spotting, particularly when there was limited lubrication or the vaginal tissue is dry. Reduced oestrogen around and after menopause can make vaginal tissue thinner and more easily irritated; this can occur with genitourinary syndrome of menopause.

Bleeding may instead come from the cervix. Cervical ectropion and polyps can bleed when touched. Chlamydia and other infections may inflame the cervix, sometimes alongside unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when passing urine. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can also present with bleeding after sex, so the symptom should be assessed rather than diagnosed by colour or amount.

Note when the bleeding happened, whether it was linked to your period, how much you saw, and whether there was pain, dryness, discharge, odour, or a new sexual partner. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test at the appropriate time for the test you use.

Book an appointment with a gynaecologist, primary-care clinician, or sexual health clinic. Depending on your history, the assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, and examination of the vagina and cervix. Until soreness settles, avoid penetration that triggers pain or bleeding; when you resume, a compatible lubricant and gentler activity may reduce friction.

Seek urgent medical care if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint or dizzy, pain is severe or worsening, or you have fever and feel very unwell. If you may be pregnant and have vaginal bleeding with pelvic or abdominal pain, get urgent assessment because pregnancy complications need to be excluded.

Any vaginal bleeding after menopause should be assessed promptly, even when it is light pink or happens only once. Otherwise, arrange a routine appointment for bleeding after sex, and seek an earlier review if it recurs or is accompanied by persistent pain, unusual discharge, or bleeding between periods.
