Bleeding after sex close to your period

Blood already leaving the uterus can become noticeable during or after sex, while contact bleeding from the vagina or cervix may happen at the same point in the cycle.

A period may begin with light pink, red or brown flow before becoming familiar menstrual bleeding. Uterine contractions and movement during sex can make existing flow easier to notice.

If the blood appears only with penetration, vaginal dryness, friction or an inflamed cervix may be relevant. Infection can cause cervical contact bleeding and may also bring unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort or burning when urinating.

Cycle timing does not exclude cervical changes. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer can present with contact bleeding, so recurrence matters even when episodes cluster near expected periods.

Use a pad or liner to observe whether bleeding develops into your usual period. Write down the date, colour, flow, whether sex was painful and whether bleeding happens without sex.

Compare the episode with your typical cycle rather than relying on the calendar alone. A changed cycle, missed period or pregnancy possibility makes a home pregnancy test and clinical advice appropriate.

Book a routine assessment when contact bleeding repeats, continues after the expected period ends or accompanies discharge or discomfort. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, test for infection and check cervical screening history.

Get urgent help if bleeding is heavy or does not ease, or if you feel faint, severely dizzy or have intense pelvic pain. Bleeding with significant pain when pregnancy is possible also needs urgent assessment.

Arrange prompt review for fever, foul-smelling discharge, repeated post-sex bleeding, bleeding after menopause or pain that is increasing.

You could ask whether the pattern fits menstrual flow, whether infection or pregnancy testing is needed, and whether an examination can locate the source. Bring your cycle dates and cervical screening information if available.
