Bleeding After Sex Between Periods

A trace of blood after friction may settle quickly, but cycle timing cannot show whether blood came from the vaginal wall, cervix, or uterus. A clinical history and examination are more informative than colour alone.

Dryness, vigorous penetration, a delicate area on the cervix, a cervical polyp, or inflammation can bleed on contact. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can present with dryness, fragile vaginal tissue, burning, and spotting after sex.

Chlamydia may present with bleeding after sex because infection can inflame the cervix. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer may also present with abnormal or postcoital bleeding, but bleeding between periods has many non-cancerous explanations and needs assessment rather than assumption.

Write down the date of your last period, when bleeding started relative to sex, how much appeared, how long it lasted, and whether there was pain, dryness, discharge, urinary burning, or a missed period. Include medicines, contraception, recent procedures, and sexual exposure relevant to infection testing.

Book an appointment when postcoital bleeding recurs, has no clear explanation, or accompanies discharge. The clinician may inspect the vaginal walls and cervix, offer infection tests, check for pregnancy when relevant, and review cervical screening history. Pause penetration if it restarts bleeding, and use a gentle water-based lubricant after symptoms settle if dryness contributed.

Get urgent care if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint or unusually weak, or there is severe lower abdominal pain, shoulder pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test. Do not delay because the bleeding began after sex.

Promptly arrange assessment for any vaginal bleeding after menopause or for ongoing bleeding with foul-smelling discharge, pelvic pain, or pain during sex.

You may want to ask whether the bleeding looks vaginal, cervical, or uterine; which tests fit your symptoms; whether a partner also needs testing or treatment; and how follow-up will be arranged if the examination does not show a cause.
