Bleeding After Sex After Miscarriage

It can be difficult to tell whether intercourse triggered the blood or made bleeding from the uterus more noticeable. The course of the miscarriage and accompanying symptoms are therefore important.

The uterus may continue to shed blood and tissue as a miscarriage resolves. At the same time, the cervix and vaginal tissues can be sensitive, so penetration may cause contact bleeding or release blood already in the vagina. If surgical or medical treatment was used, the expected recovery pattern depends on that treatment.

Bleeding that does not settle can occur when pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus. Fever, worsening pelvic tenderness, or offensive-smelling discharge raises concern for infection. A pregnancy outside the uterus can present with vaginal bleeding and one-sided pain, and it remains a concern if the pregnancy location was never confirmed.

Stop intercourse while bleeding or discomfort continues and follow the pelvic-rest advice given by your pregnancy-care team. Use a pad to observe the flow. Keep track of clots, pain location, fever, discharge, dizziness, and whether bleeding had previously stopped before sex.

Contact the service managing the miscarriage if bleeding returns, lasts longer than they advised, or is accompanied by ongoing pregnancy symptoms. Attend planned blood tests, scans, or home pregnancy testing because these checks can help confirm that the pregnancy has resolved. Do not use sex as a way to test whether recovery is complete.

Seek urgent assessment for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, collapse, fever, or feeling very unwell. These signs can accompany significant blood loss, infection, retained pregnancy tissue, or an ectopic pregnancy and should not be attributed to intercourse without evaluation.

Use emergency services if you collapse, are too dizzy to stand safely, or have severe pain with bleeding. Do not drive yourself when faint or acutely unwell.

Ask whether the miscarriage has been confirmed as complete, what bleeding pattern is expected after your treatment, and when penetrative sex can resume. Clarify whether follow-up testing is still needed, what symptoms could indicate infection, and when to seek help if a pregnancy test remains positive.
