Bleeding After Sex 6 Weeks After a C-Section

A caesarean avoids a vaginal incision for delivery, yet the uterus and cervix still undergo postpartum healing and vaginal bleeding can continue. Your abdominal incision may look improved before internal recovery and comfort with sex have fully returned.

Bleeding may be lochia that was already present, fresh spotting from friction, or the return of menstrual bleeding. Breastfeeding can lower vaginal moisture and make penetration uncomfortable even when there was no vaginal birth injury.

Other explanations include cervical irritation, a small cervical growth, or infection. Chlamydia can present with postcoital bleeding and may have few other symptoms. A clinician can examine the vagina and cervix and decide whether pregnancy or infection testing is relevant.

Stop penetration if it hurts or produces fresh blood. Track the flow with a pad and note whether it fades promptly or continues separately from sex. Once comfortable and bleeding-free, try more time for arousal, generous water-based lubricant, shallow penetration, and a position that does not strain the abdominal scar.

Discuss the episode at your postnatal check if that visit has not happened. Tell the clinician about wound changes, pelvic or abdominal pain, discharge, fever, contraception, breastfeeding, and any infection exposure. Repeated postcoital bleeding deserves review even when each episode is light.

Get emergency help for sudden very heavy bleeding, collapse or faintness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Do not attribute these symptoms to intercourse or wait for a scheduled check.

Seek same-day clinical advice for increasing bleeding, large clots, fever, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, painful urination, worsening tenderness, or a caesarean wound that becomes red, swollen, more painful, or leaks fluid. These features can signal postpartum or wound complications that need examination.

Ask whether your lochia and incision are healing as expected, whether pelvic examination or a swab is needed, and what activities fit your recovery. Clarify when to retry sex, how to manage dryness, and which contraception can be started or continued in your circumstances.
