Bleeding After Not Having Sex for a While

A small surface graze can bleed, yet blood after sex can also arise from the cervix or from inflammation, infection, or another gynaecological source.

Time without sex does not make the vagina close or cause the hymen to grow back. Resuming penetration may create more friction if arousal is limited, lubrication is insufficient, pelvic muscles tighten, or vaginal tissue has become drier around menopause, breastfeeding, or with certain medicines.

Contact bleeding is also a presentation of cervical inflammation, chlamydia, cervical cell changes, and, less commonly, cervical or vaginal cancer. That direction matters: these conditions can cause the symptom, but the symptom does not determine which condition is present.

Stop if penetration hurts or bleeding begins. After symptoms settle, allow more time for arousal, proceed slowly, communicate about depth and pace, and use a compatible lubricant. Avoid numbing products because pain provides useful warning that tissue is being strained.

Arrange a gynaecology, primary-care, or sexual-health review when the bleeding repeats, continues after sex, appears between periods, or comes with discharge, pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, or pain during penetration. The clinician may inspect the vagina and cervix and discuss infection or cervical screening tests.

Get urgent care for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe dizziness, intense or worsening pelvic pain, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. Bleeding after menopause should be assessed promptly even if it is light and stops, rather than attributed to returning to sexual activity.

Ask whether the tissue looks dry or injured, whether the cervix needs closer assessment, which infection tests are suitable, whether your medicines can contribute to dryness or bleeding, and what lubricant or moisturiser is compatible with condoms and your health history.
