Bleach lifts pigment by altering the hair shaft and can also reduce its strength. Breakage often appears as short pieces, uneven lengths, split ends, rough texture, or strands that stretch and break when wet. The damaged shaft cannot biologically repair itself, although conditioning can improve feel and reduce friction while new hair grows.

A snapped strand is shorter than its original length and lacks the small root end seen with a naturally shed hair. Hair coming out from the root, smooth bald areas, scaling, marked itch, or scalp tenderness suggests that more than shaft damage may be involved.
