Bleach burns and possible scarring

Whether a lasting mark develops depends on how deeply the chemical injured the skin, how long contact continued, the body site, infection, and healing. A flat colour change after healing is not necessarily a scar; scars involve altered skin texture or thickness.

An active chemical injury may cause burning, redness, whitening, blistering, raw skin, or numbness. Scar care should wait until the wound has fully closed and a clinician has assessed deeper injury. Later, healed skin may be darker or lighter, raised, tight, sunken, or sensitive; those differences guide treatment choices.

Remove contaminated clothing or jewellery and brush away any dry residue without spreading it. Rinse affected skin under plenty of cool or lukewarm running water, and continue while burning remains. Do not neutralise bleach with another chemical, apply vinegar, or place creams on an active burn unless a clinician directs you. Avoid rubbing and protect the area with a clean, loose covering after rinsing.

Once the skin has healed, sun protection can reduce contrast in lingering colour changes. Silicone products, injections, laser treatment, or surgery may be considered for selected scars after an in-person assessment; no single option suits every scar.

Contact emergency services or a poison service for eye exposure, inhalation symptoms, breathing difficulty, collapse, severe or worsening pain, extensive blistering, numb or white skin, or burns involving the face, hands, genitals, or a large area. Eye contact requires immediate continuous rinsing and urgent assessment. Later warmth, pus, fever, spreading redness, or increasing swelling can signal infection.

Ask whether the area is fully healed, whether it is pigment change or true scarring, and which option fits its colour, thickness, tightness, and location. Explain what bleach product was involved, how contact happened, what first aid you used, and whether movement or sensation has changed.
