What bladder cancer may look like on cystoscopy

An abnormal area may appear raised, frond-like, flat, reddened, irregular, or ulcerated. Appearance alone cannot reliably establish its exact type, grade, or depth.

The operator records the abnormal area's position, size, number, and general appearance. Cystoscopy can also show bleeding, stones, inflammation, narrowing, or other changes that may help explain urinary symptoms.

A sample or removal procedure allows a pathologist to examine cells under a microscope. That report can identify the tumour type and grade and indicate whether muscle is present and involved. Imaging may be added to assess areas beyond the cystoscope's view.

Your urology team may arrange removal or biopsy through the urethra, sometimes during a separate procedure under anaesthesia. Ask whether tissue was collected, when pathology is expected, and whether another procedure or scan may be required.

Treatment is chosen after the visible finding is combined with pathology and staging. Options can include medicine placed inside the bladder, bladder removal surgery, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy, but not every person needs each approach.

Mild burning or a small amount of blood can occur after instrumentation. Follow the discharge instructions, and contact the clinical team if symptoms worsen or do not settle. Seek urgent care for inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding or clots, fever with shaking, severe lower abdominal pain, or feeling acutely unwell.

Ask where the abnormal area was located, whether it was fully removed, and whether the specimen includes bladder muscle. Clarify who will explain the pathology, what additional staging is planned, and which symptoms after the procedure require a direct call to the unit.
