Blackheads on the Upper Lip: Safe Skin Care

The skin beside the lip can sting easily, so treatment should stay on the outer skin and away from the pink lip and nostrils. Picking, waxing over irritation or layering strong products may worsen redness and discoloration.

An open comedone has a visible dark plug made of oxidised oil and shed cells. A fine hair cut near skin level can also appear as a pinpoint, while plucking, threading or waxing may leave an inflamed follicle or temporary mark.

A cluster accompanied by other facial whiteheads and pimples supports a comedonal acne pattern. Burning, grouped blisters, crusting, pronounced swelling or a changing pigmented spot does not match a straightforward blackhead and warrants separate assessment.

Use a mild cleanser and pat rather than rub. If you remove facial hair, do not treat broken or freshly irritated skin with an exfoliating acne active. Keep fragranced balms, heavy cosmetics and oily hair products from repeatedly spreading onto the area if they seem to coincide with clogging.

Apply any suitable comedone product in a thin layer only where directed, leaving a margin around the lip and nostrils. Stop and seek product advice if marked stinging, swelling or cracking develops. Do not press the skin between fingernails or use a sharp extraction tool.

Get medical advice if the spots persist, repeatedly inflame, leave dark marks, or cannot be confidently identified. Prompt assessment is appropriate for grouped painful blisters, spreading redness, facial swelling, pus with increasing tenderness, or a sore that keeps bleeding or fails to heal.

Ask whether each dot is a comedone, hair shaft or mark, which acne active is safe near the mouth, and how to time treatment around threading, shaving or waxing. Report any history of cold sores, eczema, product reactions and pigment changes after inflammation.
