Sex does not make every dark pore a particular diagnosis. The timing after waxing or shaving, whether a hair is trapped, and the presence of soreness, drainage, or scarring are more informative than appearance alone.

An open comedone is usually a visible dark plug with little surrounding inflammation. Ingrown hairs often arise after removal and may feel tender or show a hair beneath the surface. Folliculitis can produce red or pus-filled bumps. Deep recurring lumps, draining areas, and rope-like scars in body folds are recognised features of hidradenitis suppurativa and merit dermatology assessment.

Dark flat marks may remain after a bump settles and are not active blackheads. Picking can deepen this post-inflammatory pigmentation, especially on skin that readily develops colour changes after irritation.

Allow sore skin to recover before shaving or waxing again. Keep reusable razors clean, avoid repeated passes over one patch, and wear breathable clothing after exercise. Cleanse without scrubbing, dry the fold carefully, and use fragrance-free moisturiser if the surface feels irritated.

For simple external follicular plugs, a cautiously introduced salicylic acid body product may help. Keep active products away from genital mucosa and broken skin. Do not start a topical retinoid or isotretinoin during pregnancy or while trying to conceive; discuss safer options with a qualified clinician. Never cut into or squeeze a deep lump.

A dermatologist should examine lesions that repeatedly return in the same fold, cause substantial pain, drain, smell, form tunnels, or leave raised scars. Review is also appropriate for persistent itch, spreading bumps, or pigmentation that causes concern. Fever, rapidly spreading redness, or severe swelling calls for urgent care.

If flares appear alongside menstrual changes or new medicines, record the timing without assuming hormones are the cause. The clinician can combine that history with the skin examination and decide whether acne treatment, infection management, or a plan for hidradenitis is appropriate.

Consider asking whether the spots are plugs, ingrown hairs, or healed marks; how your hair-removal method could be modified; and what can reduce further discoloration. Tell the prescriber if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy before discussing retinoids or isotretinoin.
