These plugs may resemble ordinary blackheads, but their position on the temples, cheeks, or around the eyes and the surrounding thickened, wrinkled skin can point to chronic sun-related change rather than typical acne alone.

A blackhead is an open follicle filled with oil and compacted skin cells. Its dark surface comes from exposure of that material to air, not trapped dirt. Repeated ultraviolet exposure can damage supporting tissue and widen follicles, creating groups of open and closed plugs in heavily exposed areas.

Similar-looking marks can also be ordinary comedonal acne, enlarged pores, or pigmented growths. A clinician can use the distribution, texture, and surrounding skin changes to tell them apart; a new irregular or changing dark spot deserves direct examination rather than extraction.

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid squeezing, scraping, or using pore tools close to the eyes. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, a hat, and sunglasses reduce further ultraviolet injury, although they do not immediately remove plugs already present.

Treatment choice depends on skin sensitivity and the exact diagnosis; strong exfoliants can irritate already weathered skin. Retinoids require specific advice during pregnancy or when trying to conceive.

Arrange a skin check if the marks are new, changing, bleeding, crusting, sore, or unlike the other plugs. Seek prompt assessment for a dark lesion with an irregular outline, several colours, or persistent breakdown of the surface.

A routine dermatology visit is also reasonable when plugs sit near the eyelids, home care causes irritation, or the diagnosis is unclear. Professional assessment helps avoid injuring thin eye-area skin and allows the wider sun-damaged area to be checked.
