Blackheads Around the Mouth and Chin

A blackhead is an open comedone: the dark surface comes from material in the pore reacting with air, not from trapped dirt. Gentle skin care and a suitable pore-clearing treatment may help, while squeezing can inflame the skin or leave marks.

Open comedones can appear as part of comedonal acne, often alongside closed, skin-coloured bumps. Products that sit heavily on the lower face, repeated touching, shaving, and friction from face coverings may contribute to pore blockage.

Not every dark or rough spot is a blackhead. Red, sore, itchy, scaly, or clustered bumps around the lips may reflect irritation, dermatitis, inflamed acne, or follicle irritation. Avoid applying acne medicine directly to the lips or the moist corners of the mouth.

Wash with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen. Introduce only one acne active at a time and keep it away from the lip edge; starting gradually can reduce dryness. A clinician or pharmacist can help determine whether a topical retinoid fits your skin, medicines, and pregnancy plans.

Do not scrape, pinch, or use harsh pore strips on this sensitive area. If a product causes burning, swelling, or persistent peeling, stop it and let the skin barrier settle. Professional extraction may be considered for selected comedones, but it does not prevent new plugs from forming.

Book a dermatology assessment if the diagnosis is unclear, the bumps become painful or leave marks, or consistent gentle care does not control them. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or swelling of the lips or face, as these features need assessment rather than more home extraction.

Ask whether the spots are open comedones or another facial rash, which active ingredient suits your skin, how to protect the lip border from irritation, and whether any hair-removal or skin-care product may be aggravating the area. Mention pregnancy, plans to conceive, eczema, and every treatment already tried before discussing retinoids or oral acne medicines.
