Blackheads Around the Lip Line

They can occur when oil and dead skin collect in a pore. The exposed material darkens through contact with air; the colour is not trapped dirt. Avoid squeezing them or putting acne medicine on the pink part of the lips.

Blackheads are also called open comedones and are a feature of comedonal acne. Around the mouth, oily cosmetics, lip balms, sunscreen, shaving products, or repeated touching can contribute to blocked pores. Small dark dots may also be normal hair follicles or short hairs, so a persistent spot is not always a blackhead.

Redness, burning, scaling, grouped blisters, or a crusted sore suggests a different problem and deserves a different approach. Acne treatments can irritate the thin skin close to the lips, particularly if they spread onto the lip surface.

Wash gently with a mild cleanser, rinse after toothpaste or shaving residue touches the skin, and choose facial products labelled non-comedogenic. Introduce any leave-on acne product cautiously and keep it away from the lips and corners of the mouth. Stop if the skin becomes raw, swollen, or persistently sore.

Do not scrape, pierce, or squeeze the plugs. Pressure can inflame the pore and leave a mark. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss topical retinoids or careful professional extraction when routine care is not enough. Pregnancy or plans for pregnancy should be mentioned before using a retinoid.

Arrange an assessment if the spots become painful, repeatedly inflamed, scar, spread despite gentle care, or cannot be identified with confidence. Prompt care is appropriate for rapidly increasing swelling, warmth, pus, spreading redness, fever, or swelling that affects the mouth or breathing.

Ask whether the dots are open comedones, hairs, or another lip-area condition; which of your cosmetics could block pores; where a prescribed product should stop; and how to reduce irritation without abandoning treatment.
