Is black stool normal?

Iron tablets and some stomach medicines can darken bowel movements. Foods with deep colouring may have a similar effect, usually without a sticky, tar-like consistency. Melena is different: digested blood can make stool black, glossy, sticky, and unusually foul-smelling. It may occur with Gastritis, Helicobacter Pylori Infection, or a Peptic Ulcer.

No single colour test separates these causes at home. Look for a clear timing link with a medicine or food, and pay attention to pain, vomiting, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathlessness.

Keep a short record of food, supplements, medicine names, stool texture, and whether the change continues. Continue prescribed treatment unless your clinician advises otherwise. Contact a healthcare professional if there is no clear explanation, if black stool returns, or if it looks tarry. They can decide whether examination or testing is needed.

Seek urgent help for black tarry stool with fainting, severe weakness, confusion, breathlessness, a racing heartbeat, or severe abdominal pain. Vomiting blood or dark coffee-ground material is an emergency warning. Get prompt advice if you use blood thinners or have a history of ulcers, even if the bowel change is the only symptom.
