Black Stool in Dengue: What It Can Mean

Stool that is truly black, sticky, and unusually foul-smelling can contain digested blood from higher in the stomach or bowel. Dengue can affect bleeding and clotting, so this change is not something to monitor casually at home. Dark stool can also follow iron, bismuth, or strongly pigmented foods, but a person with dengue should let a clinician distinguish these possibilities. Other dengue symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, or easy bruising.

Contact an urgent medical service now and say that dengue is suspected or confirmed and the stool has become black. Keep a photo or sample description if possible, and list every medicine, supplement, and recent food. Do not start aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or another anti-inflammatory pain medicine unless a clinician specifically tells you to. Sip fluids if fully alert and able to swallow, but do not delay assessment to hydrate. A GP consultation can help arrange examination and testing when emergency symptoms are absent.

Go to an emergency department immediately for repeated black stools, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, fainting, confusion, severe abdominal pain, cold or clammy skin, marked weakness, trouble breathing, or very little urine. Easy bruising, bleeding from the nose or gums, or worsening fever also deserves prompt advice. Do not drive if dizzy or faint; have someone accompany you and bring the medicine list.

Ask whether the stool appearance could represent digestive bleeding, which tests are needed, which pain relievers are suitable, and how often you should be checked while recovering from dengue. Tell the clinician when the colour changed, how many bowel movements occurred, and whether dizziness, abdominal pain, vomiting, or bruising appeared.
