Black stool after drinking: what to know

Alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and may worsen an existing ulcer. Gastritis, peptic ulcer and Helicobacter Pylori Infection are possible causes of upper digestive bleeding, but a person cannot identify the cause from stool colour alone. Black, shiny or tar-like stool is more concerning than a briefly darker bowel movement after a dark meal or medicine. Alcohol can also make it harder to notice dizziness, weakness or changes in alertness, so assess how you feel as well as what you see.

Stop drinking alcohol for now and arrange prompt medical advice if the stool is black and sticky, keeps occurring or has no clear explanation. Mention aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, steroids, iron, bismuth and blood thinners because these details affect bleeding risk and assessment. Do not use alcohol to settle stomach discomfort. Write down when you drank, when the stool changed, and whether you have pain, nausea, vomiting or light-headedness.

Seek emergency help for vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, a racing heartbeat or repeated tar-like stools. Severe abdominal pain also needs urgent assessment. Ask someone to stay with you if you feel unsteady, and do not drive yourself when dizzy or impaired.
