Black spots on underarm skin: causes and next steps

Shaving, friction, deodorant irritation, and inflamed hair follicles can leave flat brown or black marks after the skin settles. Razor bumps may look like dark dots around hairs, while folliculitis can present with tender or itchy bumps that later darken. A broad, velvety area is different from scattered dots and may need evaluation for an underlying trigger. A single irregular mark cannot be identified reliably from colour alone.

Pause shaving and any newly introduced deodorant if the area is sore or itchy. Wash gently, keep the fold dry, and avoid scrubbing, picking, lemon juice, or harsh bleaching mixtures; irritation can deepen pigmentation. When shaving again, use a clean sharp razor, shaving gel, and strokes in the direction of hair growth. Photograph a distinct spot beside a ruler so you can compare its border, colour, and size over time.

Book a clinician or dermatologist visit for a spot that is new without an obvious cause, enlarging, uneven in colour or border, bleeding, ulcerated, or persistently painful. Seek prompt care if redness spreads, swelling worsens, pus develops, or you feel feverish. Widespread velvety darkening, especially when it also affects the neck or groin, should also be discussed with a clinician.

Ask whether the pattern fits post-inflammatory pigmentation, an ingrown hair, folliculitis, contact irritation, or another skin condition. Also ask which hair-removal method suits your skin, whether a medicine or product could contribute, and which pigment treatment is appropriate once active inflammation has cleared.
