Short answer

Sun exposure can deepen existing pigment and contribute to new flat dark spots, but any single changing, irregular, bleeding, or non-healing mark needs examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sun effect
Ultraviolet exposure can darken both existing and healing pigment.
Monitor
Watch for evolution in outline, colour, surface, and symptoms.
Protection
Combine sunscreen with shade, hats, and covering clothing.

Why dark marks become noticeable

Ultraviolet light stimulates pigment production, so freckles and other flat pigmented marks may darken after time outdoors. Sun can also make discolouration from healed acne, irritation, or a recent procedure more visible. These marks often occur on exposed areas, but appearance alone cannot confirm that sunlight is the only cause.

Compare the mark with neighbouring spots. A stable, evenly coloured flat patch differs from a lesion that evolves, has an uneven outline, contains several shades, becomes raised, or forms a recurrent crust. A clinician may use magnification to assess structures that are not visible to the unaided eye.

Limit further darkening

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen generously to exposed skin and renew it after swimming, heavy sweating, or wiping. Add shade, a wide-brimmed hat, and tightly woven clothing, especially around midday. Avoid tanning and do not put lemon juice or harsh bleaching agents on the skin. If a product causes burning, scaling, or redness, stop it because irritation can deepen pigment.

Before pursuing peels, lasers, or prescription pigment treatment, have uncertain or changing lesions identified. Treatment choice depends on whether pigment is superficial or deeper, the cause of the mark, the body site, and how your skin responds to inflammation.

Changes that should not be watched indefinitely

Arrange an examination if a spot is new and continues to change, looks unlike your other marks, has an irregular border or mixed colours, bleeds without clear injury, repeatedly crusts, becomes persistently itchy or painful, or fails to heal. Seek prompt help for a severe blistering sunburn with confusion, faintness, vomiting, fever, or signs of dehydration.

Decide what requires treatment

Ask whether each spot has a reassuring clinical pattern, whether magnified examination or sampling is needed, and which sun-protection format suits your routine. If cosmetic treatment is appropriate, discuss irritation risk, expected gradual change, and aftercare for your skin tone. Bring dated photographs and a list of medicines and skin products that can increase sun sensitivity.

Questions people ask

Will a tan make dark spots blend in?

Tanning exposes the skin to more ultraviolet radiation and can make uneven pigment darker or more persistent rather than treating it.

Can an old acne mark darken in the sun?

Yes. Sun exposure can intensify pigment left after acne or other inflammation, which is why daily protection matters during healing.

Should every sun spot be removed?

No. Some stable marks need only monitoring and protection, while a changing or uncertain lesion should be diagnosed before cosmetic removal is considered.
