Black spots around the eyes: causes and next steps

Dark flat patches can follow rubbing, eczema-like irritation, cosmetic reactions, or sun exposure. Small plugs near—but not on—the eyelid margin may be clogged pores. A distinct raised lesion, crust, or mark at the lash line needs direct inspection because eyelid structures are difficult to assess in a mirror.

Dark circles are broader areas of shadow or colour beneath both eyes and are different from separate black dots. Acne can present with clogged pores on nearby facial skin, while perioral dermatitis tends to present around the mouth and sometimes beside the nose rather than as an isolated black eyelid spot.

Stop rubbing and remove eye makeup gently with a fragrance-free product. Keep acne treatments, exfoliating acids, retinoids, and unprescribed lightening creams away from the eyelids and eye surface. Use sunglasses and sunscreen formulated for facial use, stopping if it stings the eyes. Photograph a discrete spot without flash glare so later changes are easier to compare.

Seek urgent medical care for reduced or blurred vision, severe eye pain, light sensitivity, an eye injury, or sudden swelling that limits eye opening. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when redness and swelling spread, discharge develops, or fever accompanies the skin change. Book a routine examination for a spot that grows, changes colour or outline, loses eyelashes, repeatedly bleeds, or fails to heal.

Ask whether the mark comes from the epidermis, a pore, or an eyelid structure, and which treatments are safe at that exact distance from the eye. Bring your skin-care and cosmetic product names, and report tearing, itch, lash loss, vision change, contact-lens use, or recent eye procedures.
