Black Spots Across the Body

Their distribution, texture, timing, and associated symptoms matter more than colour alone. A sudden widespread eruption, illness, or a changing individual lesion calls for assessment rather than a single cosmetic treatment applied everywhere.

Flat marks at sites of old bites, eczema, scratching, pimples, or other inflammation can reflect post-inflammatory pigment. Folliculitis presents with follicle-centred bumps and may leave dots on the trunk, thighs, or buttocks after the active bumps resolve. Acne can also present on the chest, back, and shoulders as comedones and inflamed spots.

Roughness, scale, itch, pain, pus, and whether each mark surrounds a hair help separate these patterns. Freckles and moles may be scattered without symptoms, but a clinician should assess lesions that evolve or differ noticeably from the rest.

Note where the spots began, whether they appeared together or gradually, and what preceded them, such as itching, bumps, shaving, medicines, or a new body product. Take clear photographs of representative areas and one spot that concerns you, using consistent lighting and a size reference.

Wash without harsh scrubbing, moisturise dry or itchy skin, avoid picking, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas. Do not apply a strong bleaching agent over large body areas without a diagnosis, because irritation can worsen pigment and different lesions may need different care.

Get urgent medical help if widespread dark or purple spots appear suddenly and do not fade when pressed, particularly with fever, severe illness, breathing difficulty, confusion, unusual bleeding, or rapidly worsening pain. Blistering, skin peeling, facial swelling, or mouth and eye involvement also needs immediate assessment.

Book a dermatology visit for a spot that changes size, shape, colour, or surface; repeatedly bleeds; or stands apart from the others. A broad pattern that persists, spreads, or comes with ongoing itch, pus-filled bumps, weight change, fatigue, or a new medicine also deserves evaluation.

Ask whether all spots share one cause or whether several processes are present, which lesion should be examined most closely, and whether skin sampling or other testing would clarify the diagnosis. Bring your photographs, medication list, skin products, and a timeline of rashes, infections, travel, sun exposure, and household symptoms.
