The dark point may also be a hair visible beneath the surface. Repeated close shaving, friction, and picking can restart the cycle, so calming the skin and changing technique are central to prevention.

A cut hair can curve into nearby skin as it grows, producing a tender or itchy razor bump. Razor bumps commonly present in coarse or curly hair and may leave flat brown or black marks once inflammation resolves. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Folliculitis presents with inflamed bumps centred on follicles, sometimes with pus or crusting. Shaving can aggravate it through tiny skin injuries or contaminated equipment. A uniform shadow from hair beneath the skin differs from distinct marks left by individual inflamed bumps.

Let active bumps settle before shaving the area again. Use warm water and a lubricating shave product, work in the direction of hair growth, keep pressure light, and avoid stretching the skin or repeatedly passing over one patch. Clean the tool and replace a blunt blade.

Do not squeeze bumps or dig out buried hairs. Reduce rubbing from collars or tight clothing, moisturise with a non-comedogenic product, and protect exposed areas from ultraviolet light. If close shaving repeatedly triggers the problem, a clinician can discuss trimming, prescription care, or other hair-reduction approaches.

Promptly seek care if redness expands, pain intensifies, swelling becomes pronounced, pus is collecting, or fever develops. Stop shaving until the skin has been assessed and the acute inflammation has settled.

Arrange a routine review when bumps recur despite technique changes, thick scars are forming, or pigmentation remains distressing. A dark lesion that enlarges, bleeds, changes colour or border, or appears unrelated to a follicle needs examination rather than treatment as a shaving mark.

Ask whether the bumps fit razor bumps, folliculitis, or another diagnosis; how to treat active inflammation; and which grooming method suits the site. Describe the razor or device, shaving direction, products used before and after, timing of the bumps, and any tendency to form raised scars.
