Black spots on the face: causes and checks

Flat marks appearing where pimples or irritation healed often represent post-inflammatory pigmentation. Tiny dark plugs within pores suggest open comedones, whereas a solitary raised, scaly or changing lesion needs individual examination.

Acne can present with blackheads alongside inflamed bumps, and hormonal acne often clusters around the lower face. Folliculitis and razor bumps centre on hair follicles and may leave dark marks after inflammation settles.

Patches around the mouth can follow irritation or a facial rash, while diffuse uneven pigment may reflect repeated sun exposure or skin-care reactions. A dermatologist distinguishes pigment in otherwise smooth skin from a true growth by examining the surface and border.

Use a mild cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturiser and broad-spectrum sun protection. Avoid squeezing blackheads and pause products that sting, burn or cause peeling. Scrubs, strong acids and unregulated lightening mixtures can worsen inflammation and uneven colour.

Introduce only one new active product at a time so irritation can be identified. Persistent acne, follicle-based bumps or pigment is better matched to treatment after diagnosis; procedures and light-based care are not suitable for every type of dark spot.

Arrange a dermatology visit for a new solitary dark spot that enlarges, changes colour or outline, becomes raised, repeatedly crusts, bleeds without being picked, or looks unlike your other marks. Also seek care for painful deep bumps, pus, scarring or a rash that spreads despite stopping irritants.

Get prompt help for rapidly increasing facial swelling, swelling around the eye, fever with spreading redness, or breathing difficulty. Those symptoms signal an acute problem rather than a routine pigmentation concern.

Ask whether the spots are pigment, clogged pores or raised lesions, and whether your current products are contributing. Discuss which treatments fit your skin type, how irritation will be limited, and what result is realistic without making surrounding skin lighter.
