What should you know about black rough spots on skin?

They may be clogged pores, bumps around hairs, dark marks after pimples or shaving irritation, thickened dry skin, a crust over a small injury, or a skin growth. A photo cannot reliably separate all of these.

A plug within a pore may feel slightly raised and fit a blackhead. Groups of rough bumps centred on hairs can occur with folliculitis or razor bumps. Acne commonly presents with comedones and inflamed pimples, while healed inflammation may leave flat brown or black marks on deeper skin tones.

A spot that feels stuck on, repeatedly crusts, bleeds, develops uneven colour, or differs from nearby marks needs an in-person examination. Darkness can also come from dried blood, so do not pick the surface to test it.

Wash with a mild cleanser, use a fragrance-free moisturiser on dry areas, and protect exposed skin from strong sun. Pause harsh scrubs, squeezing, scraping, and close shaving over irritated bumps. Photograph the area with a ruler beside it and record new pain, itch, bleeding, or growth.

If spots follow hair removal, use a clean razor, shave with the direction of hair growth, and avoid repeated passes. Do not apply acne acids or lightening products to broken, crusted, or unexplained lesions.

Book a dermatology visit for a new dark rough spot that persists, changes in size, shape, colour, or surface, or repeatedly scabs without a clear injury. Prompt review is warranted for spontaneous bleeding, an open sore, rapidly increasing size, marked pain, or black tissue with surrounding redness or swelling.

Get urgent help if a dark area follows a burn, severe injury, tight bandage, or circulation problem and is accompanied by numbness, cold skin, severe swelling, fever, or feeling unwell.
