Dark, Dry Spots on the Skin

Do not assume every dark dot is a blackhead. A blackhead is an open, clogged pore, whereas a dry patch has a rough or flaky surface and may involve skin beyond a follicle.

A spot that began as a pimple or irritated hair follicle can leave temporary darkening after it heals. Acne presents with a mixture of clogged pores and inflamed pimples. Folliculitis centres on hair follicles, while razor bumps follow hairs that curve back into the skin after shaving.

Dry scale over a broader patch raises other possibilities, including irritation or dermatitis. Location adds context: bumps clustered around the mouth need different consideration from facial flushing with acne-like bumps. A single changing pigmented spot should not be classified from a photograph or description alone.

Use a mild cleanser, apply a fragrance-free moisturiser and protect exposed areas from sunlight with shade, clothing and sunscreen. Leave flakes and scabs in place rather than picking them, because repeated injury can prolong discolouration.

Stop any new cosmetic that causes stinging, peeling or redness. Avoid squeezing a follicular spot and pause close shaving over irritated bumps. Take a clear photograph in consistent light so you can judge whether the edge, colour or size is actually changing.

Arrange a dermatology visit for a dark spot that is new and changing, has an irregular outline or several colours, repeatedly crusts or bleeds, or does not heal. These features call for direct examination regardless of whether the area is painful.

Get prompt care when redness spreads away from the spot, pain is increasing, pus develops or fever occurs. If many dry dark areas appeared after starting a medicine, contact the prescribing clinician and do not stop an essential medicine without instructions.

Tell your clinician how the spot began, whether it was first a bump, and which products or hair-removal methods touch the area. Ask whether magnified examination, a skin scraping or another test is needed before using acne, antifungal or light-based treatment.
