What should you know about black diarrhea and vomiting?

Dark stool can follow certain foods or medicines, but sticky, tar-like black stool is different from ordinary dark diarrhoea. Vomiting may occur with Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, or Rotavirus Infection. Gallstones and Pancreatitis can cause significant upper abdominal pain and vomiting, while Migraine can cause vomiting without a digestive infection. Meningitis is uncommon but urgent when vomiting accompanies a severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, or sensitivity to light. The combination of black stool and vomiting needs careful attention because blood may be digested before it appears black.

Pause solid food briefly if vomiting is active, then try tiny, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Avoid alcohol and do not take anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a clinician advises them. Note the colour and texture of stool, what the vomit looks like, pain location, and whether you are passing urine. Seek emergency care for vomit containing blood or coffee-ground material, black tarry stool, faintness, confusion, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down.
