Understanding black-coloured spots on skin

Dark material visible at the opening of a pore may be an open comedone; its colour comes from material exposed at the surface rather than trapped dirt. Acne presents with comedones, pimples, or both. Folliculitis instead presents with bumps arising around hairs, while pseudofolliculitis follows hairs growing back into skin after removal.

Flat colour can remain after inflammation even when the original bump has resolved. A black surface may also be dried blood or crust after scratching. Separate from these patterns, a new or evolving pigmented growth deserves direct examination because appearance in a mirror cannot establish its identity.

Look at the distribution in good light: note whether spots cluster on oily areas, follow shaved hair, sit around the mouth, or occur as one isolated lesion. Record itch, tenderness, bleeding, scaling, discharge, and any recent cosmetic or hair-removal product. These details help separate active bumps from leftover pigment.

Keep care simple with gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and daily sun protection. Avoid needles, pore tools, abrasive scrubs, and unlabelled fading mixtures. If bumps are active, choose non-comedogenic products and seek advice before combining acne ingredients, since excessive irritation can deepen residual colour.

Have a clinician assess a dark spot that is new and unlike the others, changes in size, outline, height, or colour, bleeds repeatedly, or remains as a sore. Prompt evaluation is also appropriate for spreading painful bumps, pus, increasing heat or redness, or fever. Get urgent help for a rapidly spreading blistering or peeling reaction with mouth, eye, or breathing symptoms.

Ask whether there is still active inflammation or only pigment, and whether the pattern points to pores, follicles, shaving, or another skin process. Confirm which lesion, if any, needs magnified examination or sampling. If a procedure is proposed, ask how it targets the diagnosed problem and whether it could cause further colour change in your skin.
