Black Bump Under the Skin: Assessment and Care

A bump can appear deeper than it is when colour sits beneath an intact surface. Recent pressure, a splinter, an ingrown hair, or a small cyst may offer context, but persistent darkness should not be diagnosed by touch alone.

A bruise or blood blister often follows pinching and may feel tender. An inflamed follicle tends to sit around a hair and can become red or develop pus. A cyst is usually a defined lump, sometimes with a visible central opening, although inflammation can alter its colour.

Pigmented moles and other growths may also be raised. Melanoma can present with a new dark nodule or an existing mark that changes in colour, outline, height, or symptoms. Only an examination, and sometimes tissue sampling, can distinguish uncertain lesions.

Leave the bump intact and avoid needles, squeezing, scraping, massage, or chemical spot treatments. These actions can cause infection or bleeding and may hide diagnostic features. Reduce pressure on the site if it followed friction.

Record its location and take a sharply focused photograph in consistent light. Pay attention to whether it moves with the skin, feels fixed, becomes warmer, develops drainage, or changes between photographs. Do not delay assessment merely to complete a period of monitoring if warning signs are present.

Book a prompt skin review for a bump that is newly dark without a clear injury, growing, firm and fixed, unevenly coloured, persistently itchy or painful, bleeding, or becoming an open sore. A clinician can decide whether magnification, imaging, drainage, or sampling fits the findings.

Urgent care is appropriate when redness or swelling spreads, pain escalates quickly, pus is accompanied by fever, or darkening develops after a significant crush injury. If a foreign body may be embedded, do not dig for it.

You might ask which layer of skin seems involved, whether the colour is blood or pigment, and what test would settle uncertainty. Also ask how to care for the site, which changes require an earlier return, and whether removal would be diagnostic, therapeutic, or both.
