Black and Red Spots on Skin: Possible Causes and Care

Red raised spots may be inflamed pimples or hair follicles, while flat brown-black marks can remain after inflammation settles. Acne commonly presents with a mixture of clogged pores, tender bumps, and post-inflammatory marks. Folliculitis and razor bumps can also produce red lesions around hairs. A dark spot should not automatically be attributed to a former pimple if it is new or changing.

Location and surface offer useful clues. Spots centred on shaved hairs can accompany pseudofolliculitis, whereas facial flushing with small inflamed bumps can occur with rosacea. A rash concentrated around the mouth may fit perioral dermatitis. Hormonal acne often presents with recurring inflamed lesions along the lower face, although distribution alone does not confirm it.

Darkening after redness is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can be more noticeable and longer-lasting in richly pigmented skin, even after the original bump has flattened. Purple-black dots that do not lighten when pressed, widespread spots with illness, or an irregular pigmented lesion belong to a different assessment pathway and should not be managed as routine acne.

Use a gentle cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturiser, and daytime sunscreen. Avoid picking, squeezing, abrasive scrubs, and repeated strong spot treatments, which can prolong inflammation and deepen pigmentation. Note whether shaving, hair products, cosmetics, heat, or the menstrual cycle precedes outbreaks.

Choose treatment for the active condition before focusing on residual colour. A clinician can distinguish acne from folliculitis, rosacea, or dermatitis and tailor topical or oral care. LED light therapy may be discussed for selected inflammatory acne, but it does not replace evaluation of unexplained black marks.

Get urgent medical help for dark or purple spots that do not fade under pressure when they occur with fever, severe illness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or rapid spread. Seek prompt care for painful spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever because infection may need treatment. Arrange a skin examination for a solitary dark mark that evolves, bleeds, crusts, or looks unlike the others, and for breakouts that scar or persist despite gentle care.

Ask whether the red lesions arise from pores, follicles, or facial inflammation; whether the dark areas are post-inflammatory pigment or require separate examination; and which products suit your skin tone and sensitivity. Mention medicines, shaving habits, cycle-related patterns, and treatments that caused burning or peeling.
